Main Event: Charles Oliveira vs Dustin Poirier

The storybook ride of Charles Oliveira continued in the main event of UFC 269, with the UFC lightweight champion submitting number one contender Dustin Poirier in the third round to retain the title he won earlier this year for the first time.

“They can hit me a lot, but I’m gonna walk forward,” said Oliveira, who went to war with Poirier in the first round before using his grappling to control matters in the second round and finish it in the third.

Charles Oliveira Post-Fight Interview | UFC 269

The classy combatants shared a hug after the instructions from referee Herb Dean, then there was no friendship at all as Oliveira took the fight to Poirier, who rattled the champ with a right hand in response. The exchanges continued, with Oliveira mixing his attacks up nicely as Poirier stuck to using his fists. Just before two minutes were gone, Oliveira tied Poirier up briefly before unleashing more varied strikes. But it was Poirier landing the harder blows that were briefly stunning the champion before the Brazilian got right back to work. With 1:40 left, a right hand dropped Oliveira, and after a brief follow-up attack, Poirier put the fight back on the feet and he unloaded, but Oliveira refused to play defense, wrapping up one of the best rounds you’ll ever see.

Oliveira went right on the attack to begin round two, landing some kicks before locking Poirier up against the fence. The two battled until Poirier threw his foe to the mat. Oliveira tried to lock up the challenger’s arm, but when that failed, Oliveira settled into Poirier’s guard, landing some hard elbows while trying to make it a grimy fight. Poirier tried to hold on to force a restart, but Oliveira remained busy and in control until the horn sounded.

Co-Main Event: Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Peña

In the weeks leading up to her first title fight, Julianna Peña told anyone within earshot that she was going to become the UFC women’s bantamweight champion in the co-main event of UFC 269. And she did it, submitting Amanda Nunes in the second round of a shocker at T-Mobile Arena.

“I told you,” the 32-year-old Peña said. “Don’t ever doubt me again.”

“We’re going back to the gym, train hard and come back strong,” said a gracious Nunes.

A calf kick by Nunes opened the action and put Peña on the deck, and the champion kept chopping at it once the challenger was back on her feet. In the second minute, a jab floored Peña a second time, but she was not hurt, and the two grappled against the fence briefly before Nunes put the fight on the mat and took her opponent’s back with 2:30 to go. Peña escaped and got into half-guard, soon locking up Nunes’ arm just before the end of the round.

Amanda Nunes Octagon Interview | UFC 269
/

Peña had no fear of trading with Nunes, and she rattled the champion a few times early in the second round. Nunes fired back, but then came a reply from Peña, and “The Lioness” was in a fight. And though Peña's left eye was closing, she kept pressing, and with two minutes left, she rattled Nunes and took her to the mat. Immediately, she took Nunes’ back and sunk in the rear naked choke that produced the tap out at 3:23 of round two.

With the win, Spokane’s Peña moves to 12-4 and is the fifth UFC women's bantamweight champion. Nunes, who remains the UFC women’s featherweight champion, falls to 21-5.

Official result – Julianna Pena def. Amanda Nunes via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:23 of the second round

Geoff Neal vs Santiago Ponzinibbio

In a grueling meeting of welterweight contenders, Geoff Neal scored a three-round split decision over Santiago Ponzinibbio.

Scores were 30-27, 29-28, 28-29 for the No.12-ranked Neal, now 14-4. The No.14-ranked Ponzinibbio falls to 29-5.

The first round was tense, each fighter seemingly one strike away from changing the course of the bout, but it was largely Neal in control, as he landed accurately throughout while defending well. There were some breaks for warnings from referee Mark Smith about keeping fingers extended and a low kick from Neal, but the fast pace rarely waned.

Ponzinibbio got the fight to the mat with three minutes to go in round two, but Neal was immediately back to his feet and back in the pocket with the Argentina native, who scored well at close range as the round progressed, but late in the frame, both got in hard shots.

By the third, both combatants were bloodied and weary but still throwing, Neal holding the edge until Ponzinibbio surged back, leading to some back-and-forth trading, with Neal landing the better shots down the stretch.

There was little action in the first half of the opening round, but when it kicked off with a right hand from Kara-France that dropped Garbrandt, it was on. Garbrandt appeared to recover quickly, and he waved Kara-France in, but the Kiwi would not be denied, as a series of pinpoint accurate shots put “No Love” down again, and this time, referee Herb Dean had seen enough, stopping the fight at 3:21 of round one.

With the win, the No.6-ranked Kara-France moves to 23-9, 1 NC. Garbrandt falls to 12-5.

The first round was competitive for most of the frame, O’Malley scoring with jabs while Paiva landed several hard kicks to the leg. But late in the stanza, a right hand jarred Paiva, who tried to slug with the Arizonan, only to continue to get rocked until a series of hard blows sent the Brazilian down and brought in referee Jason Herzog to halt the fight at 4:42 of round one.

Josh Emmett vs Dan Ige

Back in action for the first time since June 2020, Josh Emmett kept his winning streak going against fellow featherweight contender Dan Ige, defeating his foe via unanimous decision for his fourth straight victory.

Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 for the No.7-ranked Emmett, now 17-2. The No.9-ranked Ige falls to 15-5.

A minute into the fight, Emmett’s first serious right hand hit the mark and dropped Ige. On the feet, Ige recovered well and shot out some stiff jabs as Emmett looked for that right hand again, but it didn’t come.

Pedro Munhoz vs Dominick Cruz

Former bantamweight king Dominick Cruz ended the year with a perfect 2-0 record, winning a three-round unanimous decision over perennial contender Pedro Munhoz.

Scores were 29-28 across the board for the No.9-ranked Cruz, now 24-3. The No.8-ranked Munhoz falls to 19-7, 1 NC.

Cruz was at his unorthodox best in the early stages of the fight as he tagged Munhoz and got free before the incoming fire caught him. But with a little under three minutes left in the opening stanza, Munhoz rocked and dropped Cruz with a punch upstairs. The former champ recovered quickly and got back to his feet, returning to the game plan for the rest of the round, which ended with a furious striking exchange.

Miranda Maverick vs Erin Blanchfield

The flyweight division’s 22-year-old phenom, Erin Blanchfield, continued to impress, as she scored a shutout three-round unanimous decision over fellow prospect Miranda Maverick.

All three judges saw it 30-27 for Blanchfield, now 8-1. Maverick falls to 11-4.

Erin Blanchfield’s grappling allowed her to dominate the opening round, as Maverick just couldn’t get free from the grip of the New Jersey product on the mat or the feet. There was more of the same in the second, with Maverick unable to hold Blanchfield off as “Cold Blooded” added to her lead heading into the final round.

Going back to the ground to start round two, Minner was fearless in Hall’s guard, slamming his way out of trouble when Hall caught his arm from the bottom position. Minner landed a good punch to start the third, but Hall used it to bring the fight to the mat again, and the submission attempts began once more, and though Hall didn’t get the finish, he was clearly the winner.

Official result – Ryan Hall def. Darrick Minner via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-27) | Official Scorecards

Costa wasn’t hurt during the frame, but he was clearly outpointed by the Louisiana native, who kept the pace high in the second, ultimately scoring with a knee that led to a takedown with under two minutes left. A series of unanswered strikes followed, and referee Mark Smith stepped in, stopping the fight at the 4:15 mark of the second stanza.

Robertson took some shots from the Brazilian early, but once she got the fight to the mat with 2:45 left, it was all “Savage,” as she landed several hard ground strikes, moved into the mount, and then sunk in a rear naked choke that produced the tap at the 4:59 mark, even after Robertson took a couple eye pokes in the process.
